Ever have a problem with your game audio or music overtaking your voice? The video above shows how to prevent this!
We’ve all had it happen. A quiet game suddenly becomes very loud and you cannot be heard over the game audio! Or you talk at a variety of volumes and your voice is sometimes lost in the video.
To compensate, use auto ducking and compression.
What is auto ducking & compression?
Ducking temporarily lowers, or “ducks,” the volume level of a specified audio signal anytime a second specified audio signal is present. In live sound, ducking is commonly used to lower background music anytime a person speaks, then raises it when that person finishes speaking.
Compressors and limiters are used to reduce dynamic range — the span between the softest and loudest sounds. Using compression can make your tracks sound more polished by controlling maximum levels and maintaining higher average loudness.
How do I use auto ducking in StreamLabs OBS (SLOBs)?
It’s very easy!
Step 1: Click on the gear icon ⚙️ in the MIXER section for the audio that you need to duck. Usually this will be something like your computer / desktop audio. In the example video, this is VoiceMeeter.
Step 2: Click on “Filters” in the menu that pops up.
Step 3: Click the + (plus) icon in the window that pops up and then in the dropdown, select “Compressor”.
Step 4: Using the image below set your settings for the values of your compressor. You may want to adjust these settings to apply more or less compression ratio, increase or decrease the output gain, etc. It is best for you to tinker with these settings to get the best results for your game / programs, as it will vary. However, I have found these settings to work for the majority of setups and games. For the “Sidechain/Ducking Source”, select the microphone you are using as this will be used by SLOBs to detect and adjust the audio accordingly
That’s it!
The results should be immediate and you will notice that your audio is far more professional for your streams and recordings!

Excellent tip to lower game sounds when you start speaking in your videos or live streams!
Your commentary improved from your last video on selective recording at https://tip.tm/streamlabs-obs-selective-recording-quick-tip where I felt you spoke too quickly. This video was a lot more relaxed and understandable for me 🙂
Thank you, George! I’m glad you enjoyed this!
